Personal Branding
Working on my portfolio gave me the perfect opportunity to work on my branding skills, as well as develop my own brand identity as a creative. Having more real-world experience and less conceptual work than other designers my age, I have more experience designing with other people in mind. Consequently, this project was both freeing and a little overwhelming. It was difficult finding my own voice in my branding. I was initially tempted to create something more geometric or generic, until I realized that I needed to take it in a direction that felt more true to who I am as a person and a designer. I really enjoyed being able to combine a myriad of design influences into one cohesive look: my love of old typefaces showcased in the Bookman titles; chunks of straight and curved lines of black à la Courrèges inspiring my logomark; and a simple but impactful use of whitespace throughout. I also decided to add a more youthful element by designing some stickers using the accent colors I came up with which was a fun departure from my usual work. Overall this was a great creative exercise that gave me freedom and opportunity to experiment, as well as solidify my identity as a designer.
